I was given some dried African Blue Basil by my sister and I loved the taste so much that when I saw a small potted plant in our organic gardening store, I bought a couple. I planted them in front of the house in the sun....and they just exploded! They were covered with flowers and bees all summer long......and the flavor is beyond description. I am rooting some over the winter....altho it's easy to find here now.....and I've also dried bags and bags of it for use myself and to give to friends.
It's a beautiful plant, grows like a shrub in the garden, attracts bees and butterflies.....and tastes like heaven in pesto, sauces, on fish......SO many uses.
Sounds like you will have a great harvest this summer. After the miserable winter we all had, that is the least we deserve. Best of luck with your garden! Basil and tomatoes, sounds like the start of a heck of a salad!

Back Again!! by: Lindy Hall
I thought that this plant was an annual..and we had an extreme winter here with lots of snow and days and days of below freezing temperatures. I was THRILLED and surprised to see this spring...little green leaves coming up from the roots of my last year's plants!!
This winter I will carefully mulch the garden bed and know that the plant will survive again :-)
Plus I bought a Thai Basil to plant in with my tomato plants...I heard that they make good companion plantings.
